Attitudes to Popular Culture
In the example of the wedding ceremonies we saw that contemporary urban conditions have led to the lapse of old cultural forms, at least among the wealthier strata and the intelligensia. I use "lapse" rather than "reject", because explicit attitudes and pronouncements are varied and equivocal. In some cases, of course, it is outright rejection, as a feature of backwardness and superstition, as against progress identified with European models. This latter is what may be called oldâfashioned modernism. Current attitudes and pronouncements would usually take account, explicitly or implicitly, of some form of cultural nationalism. This would emphasise the national cultural heritage. But such heritage is not given in all what the "people" do. Particular readings and definitions of what constitutes national culture must be developed, a project undertaken by intellectuals, politicians and state agencies. These go hand in hand with the transformations of popular culture which are affected by the constraints of the processes of socio-economic and spatial developments, but not necessarily in the same direction. One of the persistent themes in the ideological reconstructions of popular culture is what may be termed "purification". Let us consider two forms of this project.
